National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage Increase from April 2019

January 7, 2019

On April 2019, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and the National Living Wage (NLW) will increase.

 Exemptions to the NMW/NLW

·         Self Employed

·         Company Directors

·         Volunteers or Voluntary workers

It is against the law for employers to pay workers less than the National Minimum Wage or to falsify payment records. The penalty for non-payment will be 200% of the amount owed. The maximum fine for non-payment will be £20,000 per worker. However, employers who fail to pay will be banned from being a company director for up to 15 years.

Remember, Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate only if they’re either:

  • Aged under 19

  • Aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship

Apprentices are entitled to the minimum wage for their age if they both:

  • Are aged 19 and over

  • Have completed the first year of their apprenticeship

Our software automatically keeps up with any changes to the National Minimum Wage and ensures that our clients are fully compliant, so they don’t need to worry.
